Contemporary American Voices is a monthly online journal featuring 1-4 poets per issue. We strive to feature some of the best and most compelling poetry being written in America today.
Each month, by invitation only, we will present a Featured Poet. We will also present 2-3 additional poets and their work based off the recommendation of the Featured author.
While this may sound limiting to poets interested in submitting for future issues, we are always open to receiving unsolicited manuscripts and recommendations for possible inclusion.
To submit: Include 1-5 poems along with a short bio (up to 80 words) in the body of an email. Please no attachments. Put “poetry submission” in the subject field.
While we prefer only unpublished works, we will consider previously published poems as long as they have not appeared online or in print in the past year. Previously published poems must be exceptional.
Response times vary.
Send only your very best work to Lisa Zaran.
And thank you for considering Contemporary American Voices.

SHE’S GONE
Jarred from my pollyanna world;
awakened from sleep walking.
Raw grief; she is gone.
Eyes pierce the dark abyss;
she isn’t there.
Longing bring tears;
oh, to touch her cheek again.
Nothing to bind up this gaping wound;
let agony flow.
“Why” is a stray bullet;
ricocheting through my very being.
Grasping frantically at flickering images;
catching only a wisp of smoke.
Trite clichés
fuel the pain.
I would trade my life
to be in her arms again.
